Time to Come Back Home

What is “home”? We’ve all heard “home is where the heart is”

Some of my favorite songs are found in the soundtracks of Moana & The Greatest Showman. In fact, I rock it out in the car on the regular (to the point that cars often get their friends and family to watch me in their mirrors - and cool, I literally have no shame). I was rocking out in the car the other day listening to “From Now On” from the Greatest Showman - blaring the music, dancing my heart out, and singing horribly at the top of my lungs. The lyrics really speak to me, and these stood out that day -

“And from now on, These eyes will not be blinded by the lights

From now on, What’s waited ‘til tomorrow starts tonight

It starts tonight!

And let this promise in me start, Like an anthem in my heart, From now on…

~ And we will come back home, and we will come back home ~”

You can click here to listen if you’ve never heard the full song before.

I know he’s talking about going back to his wife after being influenced by the sparkle of another woman. But the song hit me right between the eyes for another reason - he’s returning to his heart. Home is where the heart is. Think about your life (and not so much your loved ones on this). Where is your heart in your life? Where does your heart belong? Where is your home, my love? Is it in the 9-5? Is it in the job? The boss? The paycheck? The grind and the hustle? Is it in your pride? Or are you doing all of these things as a mean to an ends, at the cost of your heart?

Let me challenge you a little here - if it’s not your heart that you’re chasing - whose are you chasing? The CEO for the company you work for? The parents you so desperately want to please? The partner that expects you to work yourself to the bones? To quote the song again, “For years and years, I chased their cheers, The crazy speed of always needing more, But when I stop, And see you here, I remember who all this was for”.

When I stop, and see myself here - THAT’S who this is all for! And that’s not selfish, that’s healthy - pour into your cup so you can pour into others. Taking care of yourself can be one of the most selfless things you can do.

Where does your heart lead you? Where is your home? Are you ready to come back home, my love?

We all have responsibilities that have to be met, but what can you incorporate into your life to take baby steps towards coming back home? My final quote from the song will be this - “It starts TONIGHT”. Let’s not wait for you to come back home, back to yourself, back to your heart.
